Hematology/Oncology

Leukemias and Lymphomas Program

Expertise in Treating Leukemias and Lymphomas

The Division of Hematology/Oncology in Boston has strong expertise in treating leukemias and lymphomas. We treat the three major types of leukemias (cancer that develops in the bone marrow where blood cells are made):

  • Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia
  • Acute Myeloid Leukemia
  • Chronic Myeloid Leukemia

We also treat pediatric lymphomas, which are cancers of the lymphatic system that drains excess fluid from body tissue and helps protect against infections. We treat both major types of lymphomas, including:

  • Hodgkin Lymphoma
  • Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma
    • Lymphoblastic Lymphoma
    • Burkitt Lymphoma
    • Large cell Lymphoma

Providing Your Child with the Resources and Treatments that He or She Needs.

We have a dedicated team of nurses on our inpatient HSCT unit and in our clinic. Our patients and families develop close relationships with the nursing staff. We work closely with the Division of Hematopathology and Cytogenetics to ensure that all of the necessary diagnostic evaluations are provided for our patients.

We treat our children with leukemia and lymphoma with standard of care therapy and enroll children on cutting-edge clinical research trials. We are members of the Children’s Oncology Group, the world’s largest international cooperative group which runs clinical trials for children with cancer.  We have open research clinical trials for children with newly diagnosed acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and for children with relapsed ALL.  We have an industry sponsored clinical trial open for children with newly diagnosed acute myeloid leukemia (AML).

When clinically indicated we offer hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) for children with newly diagnosed or relapsed leukemia or for relapsed lymphoma.  We perform related and unrelated HSCT using multiple stem cell sources including bone marrow, peripheral blood and cord blood.  Our children undergo transplant in a new state of the art transplant unit.  Parents are offered living arrangements on the inpatient unit while their children undergo transplantation.
