Errol Norwitz, MD, is internationally recognized for his work in maternal-fetal medicine, particularly in the causes and prevention of preeclampsia and pre-term labor. His research includes the use of progesterone to delay preterm labor in high-risk women, the genetics of adverse pregnancy outcomes, and the molecular regulation of labor and delivery, both term and preterm. He is the Chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Tufts Medical Center, and a professor at Tufts University School of Medicine. He is board certified in Maternal Fetal Medicine and Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Innate Immune Responses of Trophoblasts in Pregnancy.
The major goals of this project are to determine the regulation of TLR-2 and TLR-8 mediated inflammation and apoptosis in the normal first trimester trophoblast in response to bacterial and viral components.
Role: Co-Investigator
NIH/NICHD (P01HD054713)
2009-2014
Program: Function of Toll-Like Receptors Throughout Gestation.
Project: Role of Toll-Like Receptors and Glucocorticoid in Placental-Fetal Inflammation.
The major goals of this project are to understand the function of Toll-like receptors at the maternal-fetal interface throughout gestation, and their role in infection-associated pregnancy complications. These studies will focus on the inflammatory
function of TLRs 3 and 4 in the first trimester placenta (Project I) and the inflammatory function of TLRs 2, 3 and 4 in the decidua (Project II) and term placenta (Project III).
