Overview Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are caused when bacteria overcomes the body's natural defenses and causes an infection. The main types of UTIs that the experts in the Division of Pediatric Nephrology at Floating Hospital treat include: Cystitis - a bladder infection Pyelonephritis - a kidney infection Recurrent urinary tract infections Most UTIs are not serious and can be treated easily by antibiotics. In some rare cases, UTIs can lead to kidney infections that can become chronic and lead to permanent damage including kidney scars, poor kidney function and high blood pressure. When these infections develop suddenly in the kidneys they can be life threatening, especially if the bacteria enters the bloodstream. When a UTI causes a serious infection in your child's kidney, you can rest assured that our pediatric nephrologists will create an individualized and effective treatment plan aimed at reducing the chance of any permanent damage.
