Kidney Issues in Premature Infants Program

Overview

When a premature or low birth weight baby is born, the whole family begins to worry about how it will affect the infant's health in the long-term. Preemies can suffer from a wide range of health issues because their organs haven't been able to fully develop. In particular, when an infant is born prematurely, it can have increased problems balancing the body's salts, fluids and wastes.

The specialists in the Division of Pediatric Nephrology at Floating Hospital for Children work with our colleagues in Newborn Medicine to provide care for any kidney-related issues that may arise in preemies. We provide a range of services including:

  • Blood pressure monitoring for hypertension
  • Specialized nutrition support
  • Renal function and growth assessment

While providing these services, our expert pediatric nephrologists will be there for your family to answer any questions and give you the support you need as we work together to help your baby grow to its fullest potential.
