Congenital Heart Surgery

Overview

Pioneering Surgical Treatment for Congenital Heart Disease

Surgical treatment for congenital heart disease was pioneered at selected institutions including Floating Hospital for Children in the 1950’s. In the early years of our program, surgeons successfully performed vascular procedures like systemic to pulmonary shunts, repair of coartctation of the aorta and ligation of ductus arteriosus.

Our strong history has allowed our team to build one of the major congenital heart surgery programs in Boston. Our surgeon uses the latest techniques to repair congenital heart defects and to perform bridge to transplant surgery. His skill leads to great patient outcomes but what really sets us apart is our dedication to making sure that you and your family feel at home while you are at Floating Hospital. We understand that this is a stressful time for you and your child, so we try to make it as easy as possible.

A Skilled Team, Providing Your Child with Top-Level Care

One thing that really sets our group apart is the dedication of our staff. In addition to the surgical team, children with congenital heart disease are cared for by dedicated neonatologists, pediatric cardiologists and intensive care specialists. This cohesive team of pediatric specialists ensures that your child is receiving all of the care that he or she needs.

In addition to providing state of the art care for our pediatric patients, we similarly care for adolescent patients with congenital heart disease.  Our surgeons and cardiologists are skilled at managing patients at all stages with structural heart defects.  Our diagnostic imaging modalities include the most advanced techniques in echocardiography, CT scan, and magnetic resonance imaging.  In addition to a well equipped pediatric catheterization laboratory, we also have an up to date adult cardiac catheterization laboratory.  These diagnostic tools lead to accurate and safe assessment of our patients prior to surgery.
