Fetal Echocardiography Clinic

The Division of Pediatric Cardiology offers fetal echocardiography services to identify and treat congenital heart defects in utero. This program collaborates with the Divisions of Maternal Fetal Medicine and Clinical Genetics. Non-invasive assessment of the fetal cardiovascular system is performed as early as 17 to 18 weeks’ gestation by a specially trained team of pediatric cardiologists and cardiac sonographers.
Diagnosis of congenital anatomic defects, dysrhythmias, myocardial dysfunction, valvar regurgitation or myocardial tumors may indicate the need for active, early intervention to improve the patient’s outcome. Diagnosis of specific cardiovascular defects may indicate a specific chromosomal defect or the presence of abnormalities of other organ systems. Educational and emotional support for the parents is a cornerstone of this program.
