Third Year Fellow |
Julie Bartholomew, MD JBartholomew@tuftsmedicalcenter.org
Residency at Cincinnati Children's Hospital
My name is Julie Bartholomew and I am originally from Montreal, Canada. My professional life started as a drug representative which is where the idea to go to medical school first entered my thought process. After medical school, Cincinnati Children’s was kind enough to offer me a residency spot from 2006 to 2009 but when it came time to choose a fellowship, I had to start heading back north to hockey and snowboarding land! I now find myself at Tufts Medical Center where I am currently learning all about babies while enjoying Boston, Montreal, the ocean, the snow and much more. In addition, since discovering that nutrition and neurodevelopment are my topics of interest, the newborn medicine staff has been quite helpful in guiding me toward a research project to develop a retrospective study that will look at how nutrition and neonatal comorbidities affect growth and ultimately neurodevelopment. Stay tuned for the results! |

Third Year Fellow |
Natasha Henner, MD NHenner@tuftsmedicalcenter.org
Residency at Tufts Medical Center
I'm originally from Russia, but lost my accent, along with my figure-skating skills a while ago. I do still use things in conversation like "host family" and "what's a fudge sickle?" to the enjoyment of many. I went to University of Louisville for college and medical school, and finished my residency at Tufts. I truly loved my NICU experience here as a resident, and decided to stay on as a fellow, which proved to be a good move. Nothing about NICU training is easy, but when you work with people who make you laugh it becomes more than just tolerable. My research interest lies in resident education. I'm currently setting up a training program using a newborn simulator to facilitate and access competency of residents' NRP skills. It is a new project, which will at a later stage involve fellows, faculty, nursing, and OB teams. |

Third Year Fellow |
Rebecca Hoban, MD RHoban@tuftsmedicalcenter.org
Residency at Cincinnati Children's Hospital
I’m a third year fellow, and will finish my fellowship in 2012. I’m from the Chicago area, went to Indiana U. for undergrad and med school, and completed my pediatrics residency at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. My husband is also a pediatrician, and is a cardiology and PICU fellow at another Boston program. My main interest is in global health, so I’m pursuing my MPH in Global Health at Harvard School of Public Health. I’m doing the MPH part time over the last two years of my fellowship, and should finish both at the same time. I’m involved with two research projects. One is a project with Helping Babies Breathe, a neonatal resuscitation program for developing countries developed by the AAP. I was able to travel to Ethiopia with the AAP to assist at a training and collect data. My other project is a quality improvement project looking at the efficacy and cost effectiveness of commercially produced neonatal endotracheal tube holders. I love to travel, and after fellowship, I hope to stay in academics in a combination of clinical neonatology and global health. My husband and I have a beautiful condo in old church in East Boston, just a short T ride from Tufts. In addition to travel, I like to cook, love to shop, and try to find time for the cultural scene in Boston, from museums to live jazz. |

Second Year Fellow
|
Elisha Wachman, MD EWachman@tuftsmedicalcenter.org
Residency at Children's Hospital Boston / Boston Medical Center
I am originally from Annapolis, MD and did my undergraduate at Georgetown University. I then moved up to Boston for medical school at BU and have been here ever since. I worked as a pediatric hospitalist for a year before starting my NICU fellowship at Tufts. I am doing my fellowship research on neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS), looking at single nucleotide polymorphisms and their ability to explain the variability in NAS incidence and severity. I am also working on a QI project to improve resident education in the NICU through the creation of a lecture series. I intend to pursue a career in academic neonatology after completing my fellowship. I am a music geek in my spare time – I play the violin with the Longwood Symphony Orchestra and like to pretend to sing. I live in Brookline with my husband and my two year old daughter Charlotte. |

Second Year Fellow |
Anjali Iyengar, MD AIyengar@tuftsmedicalcenter.org
Residency at Rush Children's Hospital
Hi, my name is Anjali Iyengar and I'm one the current second-year fellows. I'm originally from Chicago, but I decided a "change-of-scenery" would be an exciting thing to do...So, now I'm in Boston and living in and loving the city and my current training program!
Our program is a great blend of clinical training and research opportunities. I'm trying my hand at bench research for the first time, but the guidance I've gotten through my mentor, Jill Maron, makes for a relatively smooth transition for someone as green as myself. Currently, we’re investigating the diagnostic value of cell-free nucleic acids from fluids such as saliva in monitoring neonatal health and development. And when I’m not on my research month or on service, I enjoy practicing guitar (but I’m not good enough to work the T-stations yet), playing trivia, or discovering Boston on foot. If you have any questions or are in need of advice, feel free to email me anytime! |

First Year Fellow |
Patoula Panagos, MD PPanagos@tuftsmedicalcenter.org
Residency at Orlando Health, Orlando, FL
My name is Patoula. I grew up on the west coast of sunny Florida. Anxiously awaiting my first New England winter, I know I am going to miss the beach. I enjoy Hellenic culture, traveling, and passing time with friends and family over a cup of coffee or glass of wine. My research topic for grand rounds during residency was on NEC. I look forward to fellowship and narrowing my focus to neonates. |

First Year Fellow |
Sharmeel Khaira, MD SKhaira1@tuftsmedicalcenter.org
Residency at MetroHealth Medical Center, Cleveland, OH
My name is Sharmeel Khaira and I was born and raised in Malaysia. For as long as I remember, I have always loved kids, so I guess it is only fitting that I ended up in this field. Being a nomad of sorts, I left Malaysia at 15 to study in Singapore, and then went on to medical school in India. I did my pediatric residency at MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland and am now in my 1st year of NICU fellowship at Tufts. My research interest is in invidualized breast milk analysis and fortification. I enjoy music, reading and am always game for a good movie. I've enjoyed calling Boston my new home. |

First Year Fellow |
Carmina Erdei, MD CErdei@tuftsmedicalcenter.org
Residency at Tufts Medical Center, Boston, MA
My name is Carmina, and I am one of the first year fellows. I should start by telling you that I was born and grew up in beautiful Romania, and I decided to move to Boston a few years ago in search of inspiration and adventure. I went to Tufts for residency; that has been a fabulous experience, enabling me to develop a passion for two fields actually - Neonatology and Developmental Behavioral Pediatrics. So, I decided to stay here at Tufts, and continue my training in a dual fellowship program that combines my fields of interest. Research wise, I am fascinated with long term outcomes of prematurity, as well as autism, so my goal is to look at autism spectrum disorders in extremely low birth weight babies. For fun, I can be found wandering in art museums, searching for existential classics in bookstores, or dreaming about traveling to all the places in the world I haven't had a chance to visit just yet. |
