The First Day

Settling In
When you and your child arrive on the unit at the Floating Hospital, staff members will help you become familiar with the environment. You will meet physicians and nurses who will talk with you about your child and his or her health history. You may also be asked to help staff members know more about your child by filling out a health questionnaire. You need to inform your child’s doctor and nurse about any medications your child is taking and the dosages, as well as any known allergies. Please ask any questions you or your child may have.
Your child will be given an identification bracelet when admitted. For your child’s protection, it is important that this band be worn at all times during hospitalization.
The first few hours after your child’s arrival can be quite busy. If your child has been admitted after a procedure, this time may be spent monitoring your child’s reaction and managing any discomfort he or she may have.
Helping Your Child Adjust
Please let your child’s primary nurse know if you plan to stay overnight all or part of the time. The goal is to adapt to your individual situation in providing optimal care for your child. Your child may be frightened if you leave. The people caring for your child understand this and can help make the adjustment easier. Your child will feel more secure if you always mention when you are leaving and when you will be back. Please keep the nurse informed as well so your child can be reassured. If you wish to make arrangements for accommodations near the hospital, a social worker can assist you.
