Floating Hospital for Children is an exceptional, full-service pediatric hospital located in the heart of Boston on the campus of Tufts Medical Center. Floating Hospital offers state-of-the-art pediatric inpatient and ambulatory services in every medical specialty from general pediatric services to the care of the most complex cancers, heart diseases and traumas. Floating Hospital is the principal pediatric teaching hospital for Tufts University School of Medicine, where all our physicians hold faculty positions. Our pediatric specialists are among the most talented and highly trained professionals in the country. Our focus and mission every day is to improve the lives of children and their families. What truly makes us different is that we treat every child as if they were our own.
Floating Hospital for Children has a well-deserved reputation for excellence in pediatric training based on more than one hundred years of experience in patient care, education and research. Our goal is to train pediatricians to be well prepared for the challenges of pediatric practice or further fellowship training.
We believe that the pediatric residency program at Floating Hospital for Children is a program where the faculty and residents know each other well and support each other in their endeavors. Residents of our program have great faculty mentorship during their residency and successfully end up in both fellowship and private practice.
We pride ourselves on patient-centered care where the family is at the center of everything we do. We train our physicians to focus on the whole patient and give them the skills necessary to become successful pediatricians.
Superlative Medical Care
Our highly trained physicians and nurses care for critically ill infants and children in our Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), our Level-III Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and through the Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Institute, the first U.S. trauma center exclusively for children. Our brand new, state-of-the-art Neely Bone Marrow Transplant Unit provides a comfortable setting for cancer treatment of the most serious nature.
Floating Hospital has important affiliations with community hospitals and physicians around Massachusetts. Our neonatologists serve in six community hospitals in the state and our hospitalists deliver pediatric inpatient care at selected community hospitals in the region. In addition, our specialists and surgeons make their expertise available in numerous satellite specialty programs for children, including Pediatric Specialty Centers in Framingham, Woburn and North Chelmsford.
The intimate size of Floating Hospital for Children means patients, their family members and referring doctors all have more direct access to attending physicians, and the Floating Hospital staff members get to know our patients and their families, ensuring that families can be included in the care-giving process. Floating Hospital for Children at Tufts Medical Center is committed to working with referring physicians, patients and family members to provide high-quality, personalized health care.
A Long and Distinguished History
Floating Hospital for Children has long been known for its many innovations in pediatric medicine and for providing care for the entire family. In fact, the very beginning of the Floating Hospital was internationally heralded as a giant step forward in the care of children. In the late 1800s, the hospital began its mission as a ship that sailed Boston Harbor offering care and fresh air to Boston's children, and teaching mothers how to participate in their children's health care.
Long since anchored in modern buildings in downtown Boston, Floating Hospital continues to improve the care of children, always remembering the importance of family in the healing process. Our hospital was the first to allow parents to stay overnight in the room with their hospitalized children. Child life specialists at Floating Hospital help children and families address their fears and worries through therapeutic play, onsite support groups and open visiting hours for parents and siblings.
Additional advancements in the care of children spearheaded at Floating Hospital range from the development of the infant formula Similac, used to nourish millions of infants worldwide; recent advances in bone marrow transplantation; the detection of genes that may affect a child's health; and innovative clinical management to dramatically improve the quality of life of children with genetically inherited metabolic diseases.
Whether it is through ground-breaking research or through the compassionate care given by our physicians and nurses, Floating Hospital for Children is dedicated to curing disease and keeping families healthy.
