Welcome to Floating Hospital for Children
On behalf of the entire team of health care professionals and support staff at Floating Hospital for Children, we extend our warmest welcome.
We are very proud of Floating Hospital for Children --Tufts Medical Center’s full-service pediatric hospital. Family centered care is the philosophy that guides our 128-bed hospital, which began in 1894 as a hospital ship. Now anchored permanently in modern buildings in downtown Boston, Floating Hospital offers a comprehensive range of services from prevention and primary care to sophisticated treatment of rare and unusual conditions. The hospital serves infants through young adults in a personalized, specially designed environment that focuses on the individual’s needs, as well as the needs of the family.
Superlative Medical Treatment
Floating Hospital has pediatric inpatient and ambulatory services in every medical and surgical specialty and can expertly care for critically ill infants and children in its Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, a Level-III Newborn Intensive Care Unit or at the Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Institute, the first U.S. trauma center exclusively for children. In addition, affiliations with community hospitals and physicians around Boston allow the Floating Hospital’s pediatric specialists and surgeons to make their expertise available in numerous satellite specialty programs that are closer to home for children in outlying areas. We pride ourselves on our patient-centered care and a culture of collaboration and excellence in the clinical management of children.
Floating Hospital is the principal pediatric teaching hospital for Tufts University School of Medicine. All our physicians hold faculty positions at the university and are among the most talented and highly trained pediatric specialists in the country.
Caring for "The Whole Child"
Floating is known as a pioneer in considering each child’s emotional as well as physical requirements. We were the first hospital in the country to allow parents to stay overnight with their sick children. That commitment to family continues today. Our child life specialists work with children and their families on maintaining normal routines as much as possible during treatments. The staff ensures that school assignments are completed, arranges private locations for family visits, and schedules therapeutic play. Other family-centered services include: in-room, overnight privileges for parents whenever possible; open visiting hours for parents and siblings; and support groups for parents and extended family members.
