Dr. Richard Van Etten Named Director of
Tufts Medical Center’s Cancer Center


Richard A. Van Etten, MD, PhD, has recently
been appointed Director of Tufts Medical
Center’s Cancer Center and has accepted
this new role in addition to his current position
as Chief of the Division of Hematology/Oncology, a position that he has held since 2006.

As Director of the Cancer Center, Van Etten will be responsible for integrating the many programs and shared resources that impact basic, translational, and clinical cancer research across the Medical Center, the Physicians’ Organization, Tufts University and the Medical School, in order to position us to be recognized as a National Cancer Institute-designated Cancer Center.

Van Etten is internationally recognized for his groundbreaking research focusing on chronic myeloid leukemia and other hematological malignancies.  He directs a research laboratory, funded by the National Institutes of Health and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, at the Medical Center’s Molecular Oncology Research Institute (MORI).

He received both his medical degree and Ph.D. in Biophysics from Stanford University School of Medicine and completed his postgraduate training in Internal Medicine and Hematology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He is an Associate Editor of the journal Blood and chairs the Myeloid Neoplasia Committee of the American Society of Hematology (ASH). He is the Scientific Program Co-Chair for the upcoming Annual ASH Meeting in December.
