KPTI, Floating Hospital Hold International Conference Addressing Latest Issues in Pediatric Trauma
FAJARADO, PUERTO RICO (May 22, 2009) – Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Institute in partnership with Boston’s Floating Hospital for Children at Tufts Medical Center will bring together international pediatric trauma experts to discuss the latest advancements and needs in trauma care at the 40th annual meeting of the American Pediatric Surgical Association, May 27.
The day-long conference, titled “Pediatric Trauma: Current Concepts and Controversies,” will include speakers from Madrid, Argentina and the United States. Experts will provide information on how to prevent traumas, how to recognize and treat traumatic injuries and how to guide children and families through the recovery process.
Sessions of particular interest include the General Re Lecture addressing Mass Casualty Management with speakers addressing crises in Madrid as well as an afternoon session on Children in War and Peace. Trauma physicians with experience in war and terrorists attacks will speak to the lessons learned during these horrific events. (For a full agenda, see the bottom of this release.)
“Education on the prevention and best treatment methods for pediatric trauma is the mission of KPTI. It is our goal to make sure there is constant discussion happening around the advancement of pediatric trauma care,” said Jon Freeman, Program Specialist for Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Institute and Floating Hospital for Children. “More than 20 experts will present their ideas, research, experience and knowledge of trauma at this conference. We believe this will spark new advancements and a greater understanding of how to protect future generations.”
KPTI organizes a pediatric trauma conference every four years; this is the first year the event is being held in concert with the American Pediatric Surgical Association.
Lee Ann Clark, Executive Director of the American Pediatric Surgical Association, said, “We are extremely pleased to add the KPTI conference to our annual meeting. These topics and these experts will provide a great service to our members who are hungry for education and knowledge in such an important field.”
“We must all continue to push the envelope in our discussions of what is working and what needs to be improved in the care of children with traumatic injuries. We must think of all children internationally – those in advanced countries who have access to exceptional medical technologies as well as those in impoverished and war-torn areas,” said Brian F. Gilchrist, MD, Conference Co-Chair and Surgeon-in-Chief at Floating Hospital for Children.
